An Inspector Calls
If you have never been visited by a Health & Safety Inspector and depending on the nature and level of risk in your workplace, many of you won't have been, that is not to say that you can forget about Health & Safety. Far from it, because you may well get a knock at the door one day.
There is a tendency to worry or be nervous about what might happen during a visit, but if you have been managing your Health & safety in the right way, there will be no need to be concerned, in fact HSE Inspectors are generally there to help and advise on the best way to do this.
A Health & Safety Inspectors primary aim is to ensure your workplace meets the required standards , to keep you and your employee's as well as the General Public safe.
The Health & Safety Law is enforced by HSE Inspectors or by Inspectors from the Local authority, they have the right to enter your workplace without giving notice at any time. The Inspector will want to look at the general workplace, the work activities carried out, your H&S Management systems and check your compliance with the Health & Safety Law.
They may offer guidance or advice in order to help you, your employees or your representatives, they can take samples, photographs and could serve you with Improvement notices if there are breaches of the HASAW Act or Regulations, they can also take Immediate action if there is a real risk to life or limb.
Fee for Intervention ( FFI )
As of 2012, if an Inspector identifies one or more material breaches of Law during their visit, the duty holder will be required to pay a Fee based on the amount of time the Inspector has spent Identifying the breach ( currently set at £124 an hour- per Hour )
